Social Awareness Programs

Art for Awareness

Combining artists, musicians, advocates and poets, these events can bring a sense of community and empowerment when shattering the silence of sexual violence. From a coffee shop in Sarasota, Florida, to a weekend outdoor music festival, PAVE features creative events to engage people in dialogue on the issue of violence and provides an artistic voice to survivors as a means of healing.

Engaging Men to End Violence

PAVE launched a men's initiative called Men Opposing Sexual Assault (MOSA) to emphasizes that sexual assault is not just a women’s issue, but one that affects everyone. A recent poster campaign created with men in MOSA and UW-Madison Health Services helped call attention to this issue The "I Have the Courage, We Have the Power to Stop Sexual Assault," poster began going up on buses and around campus. The poster men are an important part of the prevention effort, says Austin King, of Men Opposing Sexual Assault, who is featured in the ad. The group’s goal is to educate men on sexual violence and to promote gender equality.

Multicultural Approach at Shattering
the Silence of Sexual Violence

This program is engaging, inclusive and interactive exploring the issues of sexism, racism and homophobia. Presenters draw from their own experiences with sexual violence, focusing on how men and women can mutually be part of the solution. This presentation is multi-media, including video clips and music, and leaves the audience with tangible tips on how to create a climate that shatters the silence of sexual violence within diverse cultural communities while exploring multiple oppressions.

Binding Project

PAVE’s Binding Project is part of the Social Awareness Board of PAVE. The Binding Project is an international art campaign where participants write a word of empowerment on plastic zip tie bracelets which are made into “binding bracelets.” PAVE is currently collecting thousands of binding bracelets to be included in an installation art piece. These zip ties are what was used to bind PAVE Founder Angela Rose’s  hands behind her back when she was abducted.

‘It’s in our Pews’ Program

PAVE began the "It's In Your Pews" Campaign in 2008 as we partnered with Valley Kingdom Ministries (of South Holland, Illinios) and Gospel Recording Artist Kierra Sheard to talk about and deal with the realities of sexual violence in our communities with our youth. From this collaboration "Behind the Mask" was born, which is a dramatic and thought-provoking presentation that helps us remove the masks that we hide behind as a community, as believers, and as victims when facing sexual violence. "Behind the Mask" has been used as a teaching tool for youth throughout the Chicago-land area including the Fredrick Douglass Academy High School, and Precious Rubies Ministries and several women’s conferences.
